This make a memorable day trip. These caves are set in limestone rocks and have some very interesting rock formations.
The drive from Dickwella is itself interesting as it passes through tea and spice country. The people living near the Walpone Bat Caves grow cinnamon, pepper, cloves and other spices. If you are lucky they will show you how cinnamon sticks are made and you may well be able to purchase some direct from these spice farmers.
The walk to the caves is along a Jungle path with beautiful ancient Jungle trees. The friendly local spice farmers will take you and will also bring lights to enter the cave but it is a good idea to make sure you have a torch and suitable clothes & shoes to walk in the stream into the caves.
Note. Care is needed. High water levels can make entering the caves hazardous.
Dickwella is a coastal market town, between Matara and Tangalle; Sometimes spelt Dikwella or Dikwalle; Also called Dikwella South.
